Chief Ventilation and Refrigeration Engineer


The Chief Ventilation and Refrigeration Engineer, under the direction of the Technical Services Manager, maintains ventilation and heat balance models for the operation. Conducts vent surveys and updates the model and recommends system operating settings changes to achieve desired ventilation and refrigeration parameters.  Mentors, trains and develops engineering staff.

Job duties include:

  • Design, operation, monitoring, and control of the current ventilation system for the Lucky Friday to satisfy ventilation standards within Hecla, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Evaluation and proposal of ventilation systems for mine expansions, and opportunities for system improvements.
  • Provide technical and leadership mentoring to engineering team.
  • Ensure plans, budgets and schedules are sufficiently developed; management systems and processes are adequately applied; and personal attention is appropriately directed to ensure that important deadlines are met, and budget constraints are adhered to
  • Ensure technical deliverables are provided to customers within time and quality expectations.
  • Oversee projects, assist in budget preparation and cost estimations, and track costs.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate surveys, tests, or investigations. Collect data points, interpret results, and prepare recommendations.  Present executive summaries and cost estimates to all stake holders.
  • Apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria in making minor adaptations and modifications to established engineering plans or systems.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed working knowledge of the mine’s operational issues and apply sound engineering practices to resolve them.
  • Provide engineering support and guidance.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent required, with advanced education in Mine Ventilation preferred
  • Professional Engineer designation preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in mine ventilation and cooling preferred.
  • Knowledge of rotating or turbomachinery such as axial flow and centrifugal fans, thermodynamics, heat transfer, refrigeration, air conditioning, required
  • Knowledge of modern computer tools for modeling and design of large ventilation networks, computer fluid dynamics modeling, and computer aided design required
  • Supervision experience or experience directing the work of others preferred.
