Hecla owns the majority of the historic high-grade Keno Hill Silver District located in Canada’s Yukon Territory. We’re developing two underground deposits, the Bermingham mine and the Flame & Moth mine. This is a great opportunity to be part of the team that is operating one of the highest-grade silver operations in the world.
We are looking for an individual to join our growing team. The Environmental Manager will report directly to the GM-VP Operations. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure compliance with environmental permit conditions, applicable legislation, and agreements with stakeholders.
This is a 14 day on / 14 day off rotation at our Keno Hill Mine in Elsa, Yukon. All air and ground transportation to and from point of hire (POH) is included with this position.
Ensure that all operational activities are in accordance with the environmental standards and regulations set forth by the Company, the Yukon and Federal regulatory agencies, and Hecla’s Environmental commitments to First Nations and other stakeholders
Implementing and effectively communicating environmental policies and standards
Providing leading practice Environmental services to support core business
Identify environmental risks associated with the site’s activities, products and services and communicate and implement approved risk mitigation measures
Provide environmental expertise during major permitting processes and leading minor permit applications and amendments;
Understand and interpret environmental permit and regulatory requirements for site staff and anticipate requirements for permit amendments to limit impacts to production
Project management (environmental works), departmental budget development and management
Analyzing and interpreting site-generated environmental data and direct internal and external reporting functions
Lead by example, demonstrating the necessary behaviors, attitudes, and mindset to strengthen Hecla Yukon’s environmental values and culture
Evaluate Environmental department structure and make recommendations for staffing to meet Environmental department goals
Lead/conduct investigations of major incidents, making recommendations for corrective action and following up to ensure compliance with incident reporting
Develop and maintain relevant external partnerships related to workplace environment to share best practices information
Other duties as may be assigned
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline
10+ years implementing technical environmental programs, with experience in a management role
Broad-based experience with environmental aspects related to the mining industry, including but not limited to water quality, air quality environmental effects monitoring, permitting, regulatory liaison and consultation with stakeholders
Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams to meet operational objectives, develop programs to manager risks, meet corporate and stakeholder requirements and maintain compliance
Experience with Environmental Management Systems
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational skills
